Tim Owers’ debut Sydney exhibition, Anatomy of the Angophora, showcases his recent series celebrating the distinct and treasured Sydney Red Gum (Angophora costata). This endemic species features prominently across the bushland environments of the Central Coast – a region that Owers calls home – as well as the Greater Sydney and Hunter regions.

His artistic exploration of this tree began as a deliberate attempt to bring together two contrasting elements of his earlier works: rich, warm bushfire scenes and cool blue glacial landscapes. The series places the bold orange hues of the Red Gum against a bush backdrop awash in blue, causing the vibrant twisted limbs to reach off the surface towards the viewer. The wrinkles and bends that decorate the tree have been rendered in acute gestural marks, bringing a sense of movement to the anthropomorphic forms.
This series demonstrates Owers’ ability to immerse viewers in a natural environment, to contemplate the delicate intricacies it offers, and to evoke the ambience and energy of the Australian landscape.
